Chapter 1 My mind reeled as eyes were peeled, staring into my very soul, a dark one at that. The rain pelted against the rooftop and shouts of an angry mob were heard yelling for miles, their voices melting into the thunder of the storm. This is a sign, I thought. Ask me a month ago if I believed in true love and I would have laughed right in your face.
But then he came along and changed my mind and for a time filled my starving heart with goodness. His name was Aeron. That’s right, was. He was a gentleman at first but eventually, I was introduced to the devil within. That was his downfall.
A monster hiding behind a mask, that’s how I saw him. Unfortunately, he charmed his way into the hearts of the community members and made them believe that he was pure goodness while I, on the other hand, seemed like a she-devil.
They marched furiously. “Get the b-!” one shouted. “She fi dead!” another shouted. Their harsh words were barreling towards me filled with pure hatred. It’s a pity they don’t know that I’m completely innocent in all of this. This was all his fault, I grunted to myself.
Somebody save me!
Suddenly, I felt small droplets of something along my shoulder. I struggled against the iron restraints bound to my wrists and ankles but to no avail.
A pig waiting to be slaughtered…that’s what I was to these barbarians.
My blood boiled and as a storm brewed within, so was there all around.
It was blood dripping down my shoulder. Unsurprised, I shrugged it off and channeled my anger into the rising storm.
Next, fearful shouts were heard and I could sense the cowards running away. Typical. I laughed to myself. “Run you little cowards,” I screamed coolly out into the storm.
“You did this Aeron,” I spat vehemently into the dirt. “You did this to me!” I shouted into the chopping winds. As the storm raged rapidly, I felt like a ticking time bomb.
Suddenly, the air was filled with electricity and my shackles were broken.
“Shackles, shackles, shackles,” I whispered while shaking my head. These are the same shackles that oppressed my ancestors, the Africans. How times haven’t changed much, I thought upon sighing.
Suddenly, a knife whizzed past my head cementing itself into the polished oak door. I was done. Raising my hands to the sky and clasping them, I stopped the storm. The sky was now as clear as day but it wouldn’t last long. “Let’s turn up the heat,” I smirked.
I thought of all the persons that they had taken from me, first my mother then my brothers yet still I forgave them. They have wronged me for the last time. My passion burned like a blazing fire in dry times.
All I felt was the warmth radiating from my skin but I knew that by now, they were all burning.
This is what I have become…a monster.
I slinked through the heat like a predator at home and finally entered their world which was now burnt to a crisp.
My job here was done. Or so I thought.
In a flash of light, I saw the eyes of my enemies peering into my soul. I was shaken. They were alive! But how?
Immediately, a body nearby got up. Its clothes had been burned to ashes but strangely, there was not even a flake of ash on the person. Its eyes were pitch black, feeding on your very soul and its smile was a demonic twist. After he observed the dead surrounding him, he turned to me and said, “Hello, Micki Bloomer. Long time no see”.
My heart suddenly gave out.
I woke up in total darkness. “Take me back!” I demanded. Immediately, I was thrown back into my crumbling reality.
He stood there daring me to make a move. “Aren’t you going to come at me darling?” he asked with a sultry smile.
My brain was a mess and my hands were itching to find their way around his neck. Unable to control myself any longer, I threw flame after flame as I inched closer to his annoying, smug self. As I neared him, he whispered, “See you later, babe” and was gone in a flash. My anger was now over the top. I was actually steaming. “I will find you, you devil, and when I do, you’re going to wish you never met me” I whispered coyly.
I now turned to go off in search of the bastard. Bar after bar, I searched. In the alleyways, in the strip clubs, in the slums, all the dirty nooks and crannies that a scum like him would dwell and thrive. Months passed and there was no sign of him until the strangest thing occurred. The usually hot atmosphere became icy cold, time froze and day quickly turned into night. It was his doing. I could feel it. As I suspected, the devil himself appeared right in front of my very eyes with a dirty smirk plastered on his face. “Heard you were looking for me darling,” he whispered the last word dangerously but seductively.
I hated this creature like poison. “I know you hate me darling,” he said reading my mind and calling me something that I detested. I was anything but the Devil’s darling.
“Jump off,” I muttered annoyed by the pride in his voice. “Will you come with me d-,” I swung a punch at his smug face which he, sadly to say, dodged just in time. “Now, now you short tempered little girl,” he called as he inched closer to me. “Don’t go damaging this overly handsome face of mine. It takes a little time to heal you know,” he smirked knowing he could never be killed by me. I guess that’s why he finally decided to show up. Yes. He got quite bored easily, if I’m remembering correctly. Well, I was about to give him a little surprise after which we would all be rid of this prick for a long time.
He peered into my eyes watching them glow with mischief. “What are you planning to do with me?” he asked while he ravaged my body with his eyes hungrily as if only seeing me for the first time. I recoiled immediately, my mind instantly understanding what he was referring to. His smile widened at the sight of my unease. As I stepped back, my left heel met the severely burnt remains of one of my victims. A charred semi-molten gold pendant hung about what used to be the stranger’s neck. The memory of what I had done came rushing back in waves, and guilt, horror and anger at who I had become washed over me like a plague. I stood my ground deciding to fight back against the devil that was darkness personified.
“So you’ve decided to go down fighting,” he stated not surprised then laughed but there was no light in his eyes. They were both filled with a dangerous darkness that threatened to swallow you whole, draining you of all the love you’ve ever felt leaving you a mere soulless body left to roam this miserable earth.
“Let’s do this,” he said in a low growl.
One minute I was taking my fighting stance and the next, I had been thrown into a wall fifty meters behind me. That hurt like hell.
“Do you want to continue darling? Because I can go all night,” he said with a smirk. I narrowed my eyes, locking in on my prey as I slowly got up.
“Oh, well I guess you can’t get enough of me, can you? You know darling…you should know when to stay down,” he said with a twisted smiling.
I was quiet. The energy around swirling into a tornado while my feet slowly came off ground.
He rolled his eyes at me, calling it all just theatrics.
“Pity,” I whispered to myself. “I have a surprise for you!” I shouted with the wind acting as an amplifier.
“Yes? And what is that?” he asked faking politeness.
“Soon,” I stated.
At the center of the tornado, I was raging. My kinky girls were alive in the harsh winds. They flew every which way. My hands were held high and my feet were together pointing towards the ground. Everything around me was swirling. The closer I got to him, the darker the clouds became. As I paused directly in front of him, I noticed how he stood his ground, although shakily. “You’re coming up,” I told him while channeling a wind tunnel to bring him in. This was it, I thought to myself. I was almost there. I readied the knife.
“I figured you would have that once you mentioned a surprise,” he chuckled. “Darling, do you really think that I would allow you to send me there? Well, you are more stupid than I tho-,”
At that point, I jabbed at him with the ethereal knife in a fit of anger. Unfortunately, it barely did any damage. It only sliced open his stomach instead of successfully going through.
Then I saw true rage. In a flash of lightning, something happened and the next moment, I was watching my body, from somewhere faraway, being covered in complete darkness. It was like the night sky had become void of all light and come down to wrap my body in total darkness. I was horrified.
It was a complete disaster. I had failed.
Suddenly, he turned his head towards my direction but then looked quickly away. It was like I was not even there.
What just happened, I wondered.
Replaying the events in my mind, it clicked that I had watched my body be engulfed in darkness. “Wait. If my body was there, then where am….,” I paused and looking at myself for the first time noticed the translucent form of what used to be my actual body.
I screamed indefinitely.
“What the hell happened to me?!” I screamed frightened by my appearance. This can’t be happening, I thought to myself.
Immediately, I rushed to the scene of my supposed death. He was gone.
Destruction alone was left. As I took a closer observation of the scene, I spotted a strange dark mist settled over the place where I had managed to stab Aeron.
I was frantic and so caught up in my own world that I did not realize the hundreds of ghostly eyes staring at me in curiosity.
It was them. The people that I had killed.
I held up my hands to blow them away with strong winds but nothing came. I tried to connect with the elements but all that happened was my form started vibrating and oddly enough, I felt a searing pain all over. Where was my magic? It was all gone. As my onlookers became familiar with my face, their curious stares became angry ones and immediately only one thought came to mind.
Run.
And run I did!
